What is Next Generation  9-1-1?

Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) is when most 9-1-1 call centres in Canada will migrate to internet protocol (IP)-based technology from older analog type technology. The initial migration will create the base infrastructure required to provide additional tools and information for first responders. In the future, new capabilities will be announced that will allow the public calling 9-1-1 to provide additional information for first responders to serve them better.

How is NG9-1-1 going to affect me?

As a 9-1-1 caller, you will still dial 9-1-1 from your cellular phone, smartphone, your residence or your business.  You will not have to switch to any new services or install new apps on your devices.
Some future capabilities will only be available to smartphone users and eventually, to other smart devices.

What do I have to do to use NG9-1-1?

Nothing! Any potential software updates required for NG9-1-1 to function will be delivered to your phone.  You will not have to install any stand-alone apps or subscribe to any new services.

When will NG9-1-1 rollout?

The various 9-1-1 call centers across Canada will begin switching over to NG9-1-1 in 2023. The transition should be completed by March 2027 in most areas.

Check back here for updates.

Will I be able to send Texts to 9-1-1?

It will not be possible to send direct text or MMS messages to 9-1-1.

The capability for engaging with a 9-1-1 call centre through Real Time Texting is being planned for a future stage.  After dialling 9-1-1 and establishing a connection, you will see two options: "Voice Call" and "RTT Call". At this point you could then choose to engage in a Real Time Texting session. You would do this by pressing the "RTT Call" button instead of pressing the "Voice Call" button. This would allow you to interact with the 9-1-1 call centre via Real Time Text, in addition to sharing information verbally. Please visit the RTT9-1-1 section for additional details.

Will I be able to make video calls to 9-1-1 or send pictures and videos?

You will not be able to make video calls, send pictures and/or videos.

These capabilities are being considered for future developments but will not take place until the initial implementation is complete in 2027. Check back here for updates.
