What is Real Time Texting (RTT) ?

RTT9-1-1 is not yet available in Canada

This function will be different than traditional texting, SMS, MMS or email.

You will not be able to use these traditional apps to contact 9-1-1.
Real-Time Text (RTT) is a future feature of Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1). It will enable text-based communication in a way that is different to traditional SMS texting communications. RTT9-1-1 allows text to be transmitted while it is being typed.  Because of the method used, you will not have to hit send after typing your message.  Each character will appear simultaneously at the other end as you type.  You will also not be able to attach files as messaging will be in plain text.

When RTT9-1-1 becomes available to the public it will be part of the base operating system of your smartphone and you will not need to download an app to use it. There will be no additional costs for this service.

Check back here regularly for updates.
In the future, when RTT9-1-1 is available in your area, speaking to a 9-1-1 operator will still be your best option, so call if you can!  RTT9-1-1 if you can't!
